ASTM A841 Grade A steel is a steel plate for pressure vessels produced using Thermo-Mechanical Control Process (TMCP).
Characteristics
High Strength and Toughness:
Produced via TMCP, ASTM A841 Grade A steel achieves high toughness while maintaining its strength.
In terms of specific mechanical properties, its tensile strength typically ranges from 485 MPa to 620 MPa. The yield strength (for thicknesses not exceeding 100 mm) is generally not less than 295 MPa. The elongation is ≥22% for a gauge length of 50 mm and ≥18% for a gauge length of 200 mm.
Good Weldability:
Designed specifically for welded pressure vessels, this steel plate exhibits excellent weldability, facilitating welding operations during the manufacturing process.
Controlled Chemical Composition:
The chemical composition is strictly controlled to ensure stable performance. The main element contents are as follows: carbon (C) ≤0.20%, silicon (Si) between 0.15% and 0.50%, manganese (Mn) between 1.00% and 1.60%, phosphorus (P) ≤0.035%, sulfur (S) ≤0.040%, and acid-soluble aluminum (Als) content ≥0.020%.
Flexibility in Heat Treatment:
Heat treatment methods include annealing, normalizing plus tempering, or, with the purchaser's consent, accelerated cooling from the austenitizing temperature using air blast or liquid quenching, followed by tempering. The minimum tempering temperature is 675°C, providing flexibility in heat treatment processes.
Applications
Pressure Vessel Manufacturing:
ASTM A841 Grade A steel is primarily used for manufacturing welded pressure vessels, such as reactors, heat exchangers, separators, spherical tanks, oil tanks, and liquefied gas tanks.
Power Plant and Boiler Industries:
In the power plant and boiler industries, this steel plate is utilized to manufacture key equipment and components, including boiler drums, liquefied petroleum gas cylinders, high-pressure water pipes for hydroelectric power stations, and turbine scroll cases.
Petroleum and Chemical Industries:
Due to its excellent mechanical properties and corrosion resistance, ASTM A841 Grade A steel is also widely applied in the equipment manufacturing of the petroleum and chemical industries.
