ASTM A283 Grade B carbon steel Characteristics

A283 Grade B carbon steel is a low- to medium-strength structural steel widely used in general engineering and construction.

Compared to Grade A, A283 Grade B steel has slightly higher tensile and yield strengths, typically around 230 MPa minimum yield strength and 410–550 MPa tensile strength, while maintaining good ductility and weldability. Its moderate carbon content allows easy forming, machining, and welding, making it suitable for a range of fabrication processes.

A283 Grade B steel performs well in environments where moderate stress, pressure, or load-bearing capacity is required, such as bridges, building frameworks, tanks, and industrial equipment. It is not ideal for highly corrosive or extreme-temperature conditions unless properly protected.

Similar products include ASTM A36, EN s235jr, and JIS SS400, offering comparable mechanical properties and applications.  A283 Grade B is often chosen for its balance of strength, workability, and cost-effectiveness, making it a reliable option for general structural and industrial uses.
