A514 Gr.E steel plate is a type of high-strength, low-alloy steel plate. The A514 Gr.E U.S. standard designates a high-yield-strength alloy steel plate; A514, under the ASTM standard, refers to a high-strength, weldable steel plate that has undergone quenching and tempering.
Grade: A514 Gr.E
Standard: ASTM A514/A514M
Main Applications: Primarily used in marine engineering, petrochemicals, shipbuilding, bridge construction, mining machinery, engineering vehicle lifting gears, large excavators, and other specific fields.
ASTM A514/A514M Gr.E Chemical Composition:
Carbon (C): Content is typically controlled within the range of 0.12% to 0.21%. It is one of the most critical alloying elements in steel, directly influencing the steel's strength, hardness, and toughness.
Silicon (Si): Content is typically controlled within the range of 0.35% to 0.5%. It primarily serves as a deoxidizer and can enhance the steel's strength and hardness; however, excessively high silicon content may reduce the steel's plasticity and toughness.
Manganese (Mn): Content is relatively high, typically ranging from 0.90% to 1.65% (some sources cite a range of 1.2% to 1.7%). It improves the steel's strength and hardness while simultaneously enhancing its hardenability and weldability.
Phosphorus (P) and Sulfur (S): As detrimental elements in steel, their content requires strict control. Typically, phosphorus content is limited to ≤0.035% (some sources cite ≤0.025%), and sulfur content is limited to ≤0.035% (some sources cite ≤0.005%).
Other Alloying Elements: May include specific amounts of chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), molybdenum (Mo), vanadium (V), etc., to enhance the steel plate's corrosion resistance and high-temperature performance.
ASTM A514/A514M Gr.E High-Strength Steel Ultrasonic Testing:
For ASTM A514/A514M Gr.E high-strength steel, ultrasonic testing can detect internal defects such as cracks, porosity, and inclusions. For steel plates exceeding a certain thickness (e.g., greater than 20 mm), it is recommended to perform ultrasonic flaw detection to ensure quality assurance.
A514 Gr.E Steel Plate Rolling: Large-scale rolling mills are utilized to roll ingots or slabs into steel plates of the required thickness. During the rolling process, the temperature and deformation of the steel plate must be strictly controlled.
ASTM A514/A514M Gr.E Steel Heat Treatment:
This process includes quenching and tempering treatments. Quenching involves heating steel plates to a temperature of no less than 900°C followed by rapid cooling to enhance their hardness and strength;
Tempering is performed at a temperature of no less than 620°C to relieve the internal stresses induced by quenching while preserving the steel plates' strength and toughness.
