ASTM A283 GR.D Steel Plate: Properties, Production and Applications
ASTM A283 GR.D is a typical low-to-intermediate tensile strength carbon structural steel plate, featuring low carbon content (≤0.27%), balanced chemical composition, cost-effectiveness and reliable ductility. It boasts moderate strength, good toughness and excellent forming performance, making it a preferred material for general structural engineering, with stable quality and easy procurement.
The production of ASTM A283 GR.D steel plate mainly adopts hot rolling process, smelted via open hearth, basic oxygen or electric furnace. After strict smelting, continuous casting and hot rolling, it can be normalized at 899℃ with slow furnace cooling as optional heat treatment, to refine internal structure and improve mechanical uniformity, complying with ASTM A283/A283M standard specifications.
Regarding mechanical properties, it has a minimum yield strength of 230MPa, tensile strength ranging from 415MPa to 550MPa, and elongation rate ≥20%. These indicators endow the steel plate with strong resistance to deformation and cracking, fully satisfying the mechanical performance requirements of general industrial and construction applications.
This steel plate supports diversified fabrication processes. It has outstanding weldability, suitable for conventional welding methods without special preheating for thin plates; it also performs well in cutting, rolling, bending and machining, meeting diverse processing needs of structural parts.
In terms of service scenarios and temperature, ASTM A283 GR.D is widely used in building structures, bridge components, storage tanks, mechanical supports and general welded structures, suitable for normal atmospheric temperature environments, and can adapt to mild low-temperature non-critical working conditions.
